The energy revolution goes hand in hand with the advent of new technologies, decentralised generation and the emergence of many new small players. This development is described internationally in European climate goals, but for Elia it is important to have good local information, even when these small players are not directly connected to the Elia grid. This local information is crucial, for example, for making short-term forecasts of generation from renewable sources, calculating total energy consumption, determining the need for local flexibility, etc. Accordingly, over the last few years, Elia has been establishing a database comprising information from our customers and the various Belgian distribution system operators.
It is the role of Scenarios Processes & Data to make the shift from national to local data. To this end, load and generation are handled separately. A Data Steward & Modeller is responsible for each of these two branches. This vacancy is for the position of Data Steward & Modeller for generation.
In a nutshell, this role has two parts. The first part, Data Steward, involves managing data on generation units in the interest of the organisation. The Data Steward defines and monitors KPIs related to the quality of data management activities. The Data Steward leads campaigns to improve these KPIs.
The Data Steward will:

  • Intelligently capture and document the business concepts and rules for generation data so that the current level of data management for that activity can be measured.
  • Perform structural and ad hoc analyses on data quality to identify root causes of quality issues in collaboration with internal partners and end users. The Data Steward also establishes a link with other data sources.
  • Either carry out the implementation of solutions (curative actions or long-term solutions) himself/herself or coordinate and monitor them. This includes scripting quality checks himself/herself, setting up consultation meetings with distribution system operators to discuss data quality, following the IT development roadmap together with the Business Analyst, etc.
  • Determine, monitor and report data quality KPIs.
  • Take part in Group-wide data initiatives, such as the Data Governance Committee, and unify the needs of the various business units.

The second part, Data Modeller, involves developing and improving models based on current generation data that determine the future distribution of different types of generation units across Belgium and combining these with European forecasts.
The Data Modeller will:

  • Inventory, document and manage the current models (distribution of solar generation, distribution of onshore wind generation, etc.);
  • Make further refinements to existing models himself/herself;
  • Draft new models with the help of external data consultancy partners (tender, execution and closing).
  • Be responsible for creating reference photos of generation units that serve as the basis for grid models.

  • You have a master's degree in an analytical field.
  • You are familiar with the electricity sector or you are able to quickly gain an understanding of this sector and the underlying concepts.
  • You are structured, meticulous and persistent.
  • You have experience with hands-on data management and use.
  • You have advanced knowledge of Excel (PivotTables, Power Query, etc.), R (or Python, but you are willing to learn R quickly) and SQL (optional).
  • You can 'let data speak for itself' and you are not afraid of large datasets.
  • You are proactive and have a sense of responsibility.
  • You enjoy working with others and you are a team player.
  • With your communication skills you can ensure workshops run smoothly, with you playing a leadership role, if necessary. You can adapt your communication style to the situation.
  • You speak fluent Dutch and/or French, and you have a good command of English.
